Walking routes for Manchester. The routes cover two specific areas roughly the North and South of central Manchester.
There are diversions off the main route to allow yourself /guests to visit as many varied pubs as possible.
The pubs selected are not from the big nationals but do include the larger Manchester and area breweries.
These are as follows, Hydes, Robinsons, Holts and Lees.
The pubs are sellers of the above beers, ales plus as many local northwest regional brews.
Also included are some pubs that do food. A couple of Spoons but there is a plethora of eateries around the city centre, sit down and takeaways.

Ind = Independent pub & Brewer. Stating independent for some of the pubs is not strictly true, what these pubs offer is a varied selection of cask ales.
Starting from Café Beermoth Brown Street ManchesterM2 1DA @ 1600hrs (4pm)
Route One North Central Manchester
Out of the Café Beermoth turn Right down Brown Street to its junction with Market Street Turn Right and head towards Tim Hortons on the corner of High St, Market Street. Walk down High Street on the lefthand side to the second Large Manchester Arndale Sign.
Enter the Arndale centre and immediately on the Righthand Side is the Micro Bar (Ind). This bar shuts at 1815hrs.
Come out of the Arndale turn right head back down to the traffic lights, cross over the road and head up Church Street on the lefthand side to Red Lion Street. Turn Left onto Red Lion Street (Walk up past the hoarding) and The Abel Heywood (H), is on the lefthand side.
Out of the Abel turn right follow Turner St onto John St at the junction with Thomas Street the Millstone (L), is on the corner to the right. (A very lively locals pub with Karaoke)).
If you do turn left onto Thomas Street, (there are a lot of craft beer bars on this street) walk all the way down Thomas St to its junction with Shudehill. Turn right on Shudehill and the Hare & Hounds (JH), is on the righthand side.
Out of the Hare & Hounds turn right walk up Shudehill to its junction with Swan Street
DIVERSION 1
Here you may want to cross over the lights onto Rochdale Road, walk up the road on the left-hand side 1st left is Angel Street and the Angel Pub (Ind) (where SPBW Greater M/c Branch started) If you carry on up Rochdale Road 4th left is Gould Street and The Marble Arch (Ind) is on the corner.
End of Diversion Back to The Main Route
Turn right and walk up to the Mackie Mayor. This is a food hall with the Jack in The Box (Ind) bar is located in the corner and this place closes at 2145hrs. You are better entering the site on the corner entrance off Swan Street. This a Blackjack Brewery bar & across the street is The Smithfield Market Tavern (Ind) another Blackjack Brewery pub.
Come out of the Smithfield turn right down Swan St on the left-hand side is Bar Fringe (Ind). Out of Bar Fringe turn left walk to the junction of Oldham Road and Swan Street and you’ll see the Crown & Kettle (Ind). This is the last on the route.
Diversion 2
Coming out of Crown & Kettle cross over Great Ancoats Street head down Oldham Street on the left-hand side is The Castle (R).
DIVERSION 2 Continued
Out of the Castle turn left head down Oldham Street to Warrick Street, walk down Warrick Street to turn right onto Spear Street walk down to Faraday Street the Pie & Ale (Ind) is on the left-hand side.

Route 2 South Central Manchester
Out of Café Beermoth turn left walk down to King Street cross over the street carry onto the end of Brown Street, turn left on to Booth Street then turn right onto Cooper Street. The City Arms (Ind) is just a few steps down on Kennedy Street. The City is flanked by The Vine to the right and Waterhouse (Spoons) to the left.
Out of The City turn right onto Cooper Street at the traffic lights cross over Princess Street to ST Peters Square. Walk down Moseley St on the left-hand side to the junction with Oxford Street (Watch out for the Trams) Head down Oxford Street to its junction with Portland Street. On the corner is The Paramount (Spoons).
DIVERSION 1.
Carry on down on Oxford Street on the right-hand side cross over Whitworth Street West continue down Oxford Street turn right before the railway bridge to The Salisbury (Ind) Back onto Oxford Street turn right and walk on the left-hand side down to Charles Street. Walk up Charles Street to the Lass O Gowrie (Ind)
Diversion 1 ends Back to Main Route
Cross over Oxford Street and walk down Chepstow Street to The Peveril of The Peak (Ind)
Turn left or right depending which you come out of the Peveril cross over Great Bridgewater Street to The Rain Bar (L)
Turn left out of The Rain Bar walk down Great Bridgewater Street and at its junction with Lower Moseley Street is the Britons Protection (Ind). ( You may want to carry on to the next pub)
Out of the Britons turn left cross over at the lights carry on down Great Bridgewater Street, cross over Deansgate at the Hilton Hotel, walk down Liverpool Road to Cask (Ind) on the left hand-side.
14/10/2023 Stockport Visit
Starts at 1200hrs at The Magnet 51 Wellington Road North, Stockport, SK4 1HJ. There will be up to 5 beers from the wood on tap. Should you be able to drag yourself away from here the next stop will possibly be Runaway Brewery, 9-11, Astley Street, Stockport, SK4 1AW. Turn right out of the Magnet walk down the hill over the motorway, turn 1st right Heaton Lane pass in front of the Travel Lodge 1st left the Runaway Brewery is on the left hand-side.
Then onto The Petersgate Tap, 19a St Petersgate, SK1 1EB. Turn right out of Runaway then right again at Heaton Lane to the junction of Wellington Road North, cross over the road turn right walk up the road (hill) 3rd left is St Petersgate, follow the road the bar is on the right hand-side.
There may be visits to other hostelries they may be decided on the day.
15/10/2023 Rochdale Visit
Starts at the Flying Horse Hotel, Packer Street, Rochdale, OL16 1NJ. The Hotel opens at 1000hrs. The upstairs function room has been booked for the SPBW members for a sit-down roast dinner from the upstairs kitchen. This a table service from 1300hrs @ £10 per head there are only 60 covers available, a booking fee is required payable by bank transfer to.

The meal options are, Roast Beef, Gammon & Nut Roast, (Diners may combine the meat choices). There will be up to 4 beers from the wood available in the function room so you are advised to book early.
There is a main kitchen downstairs’ which should be able to cater for the people who miss out upstairs. This also subject to the number of regular customers.
The numbers attending is important as this will let Lucy (management) & colleagues know how many will be attending (for the meal).
After the Flying Horse, there will be a walk around Rochdale’s finer pubs. These will be decided on and sent out at a later date closer to the Members weekend.
